U.S. scientists have developed a material that can store solar energy in chemical form and release it on demand. The new technology may overcome one of the greatest obstacles of harnessing solar energy, or intermittent sunlight. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University discovered that azobenzene, a type of photoswitching molecules, can absorb and store the sun's energy. It changes into a different shape during this process. When exposed to a small amount of heat, light or electricity, these molecules will resume its initial shape, liberating the stored energy. The material presents an environmentally friendly alternative because nothing is consumed or burned during the process. Hence, there will be no emissions. To generate sufficient heat,...

The material presents an environmentally friendly alternative because nothing is consumed or burned during the process. Hence, there will be no emissions. To generate sufficient heat, the molecules have to be packed very closely. The team attempted to attach the molecules to a single carbon nanotube, but the results were far from satisfactory. Scientists later realized the problem can be resolved if multiple nanotubes are packed closer together. Azobenzene will not be efficient at producing electricity, but can be employed for heat-related uses, such as cooking. Scientists envision that the materials will be used in liquid form, providing an efficient and safe alternative to using firewood for cooking in developing countries.

What seemed utopic more than 40 years ago is about to become reality: the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA especially is hell-bent on harvesting solar energy from space by 2030. Researchers from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) managed to transfer 1.8 kilowatts of power via microwaves to a specific receiver located at a distance of 170 feet (55 meters). You may think that it’s not such an impressive distance, and the delivered energy was only enough to power an electric kettle, but the experiment opens up new prospects for alternative energy research. In particular, similar technology could be utilized for collecting solar energy in space and delivering it to Earth. In fact, this is how the International Space Station is powered – it converts sunlight into electric current with the help of solar cells placed on its solar array wings. The Japanese Science and Economy and Trade Ministry are currently pushing the project, set to launch in 2030. Just last month they put together the Institute for Unmanned Space Experiment Free Flyer (USEF) consortium consisting of several high-tech giants such as Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Fujitsu and Sharp. Given that Japan has few energy resources of its own and therefore relies heavily on oil imports, it is no surprise that the country has long been a leader when it comes to solar and other renewable energies. It seems that after more than a century, someone eventually managed to come close to Nikola Tesla’s breakthrough in transferring wireless electric power. Japanese scientists for the first time succeeded in transmitting electricity wirelessly through the air. In any case, I strongly believe that the world community will soon realize that alternative sources of energy are the only way for humanity to survive. While definitely different than Tesla’s idea of FREE energy, if the SSPS is finally implemented, we would have a permanent supply of wireless electric power regardless of the time of the day and the weather conditions. Korolev died on January 14th 1966, and his loss enabled the US to catch up and exceed the Soviet’s spacefaring capabilities. But was his death an accident, or something more sinister? In 1966 Indian Nuclear Physicist Dr Homi Jhangir Bhabha claimed India was on the verge of producing a nuclear weapon, but this man so important to achieving that goal was killed in a suspicious plane crash not long after his speech. It is speculated that the CIA assassinated Bhabha to prevent India acquiring nuclear weaponry. India successfully tested a nuclear weapon 8 years later, with the fantastically named Smiling Buddha device, which India said they’d used to cause a “peaceful nuclear explosion”, a description which makes about as much sense as a pleasant case of diarrhea, or a really lovely Isis video. Eugene Mallove was a scientist, science writer and a believer in cold fusion, a hypothetical form of nuclear reaction which could provide the world with cheap energy. Unsurprisingly this isn’t something which major energy companies would like to see developed, because when energy becomes cheaper the gas and oil fat-cats will have to start downsizing their yachts and stop eating bathtubs full of caviar, which is what I presume rich people do. In the last twenty years scores of world-famous astronomers have died around the world, with many being close colleagues in deep field and earth collision studies. Allan Sandage and Geoffrey Marsden were astronomers and colleagues who died within days of each other of a rare non-transmittable disease affecting only 1 in 100,000 people. It was rumoured that both were warned against revealing information about an imminent earth-bound asteroid, and they weren’t the only ones. In 2003 Britain’s Government was struggling to find compelling reasons to join the Iraq war alongside America. They eventually released a dossier detailing how Iraq had weapons of mass destruction capable of launching within 45 minutes. But, in an off the record remark to a BBC journalist, Dr David Kelly, a biological warfare scientist employed by the Ministry of Defence, basically said these claims were a crock of crap.

There must be another energy input for this to happen, then a month later a second ice avalanche with the same strange events occurred. Also blue plasma energy appeared during a hailstorm in Ohio, and as the grand solar minimum intensifies, these electric sky events will also become more common. Tower exterior SUGGESTED LEAD-IN: Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe and has long been viewed as the potential renewable pollution-free fuel of the future. Up until now, extracting hydrogen has been expensive, but an international group of researchers have developed a revolutionary new method - using concentrated solar energy - bringing closer the dream of using hydrogen as a 'green' fuel. VOICE-OVER: Michael Epstein heads the Solar Research Facilities Unit at the Weizman Institute in Israel. He and an international team of scientists believe the key to limitless energy could be as clear as .... well sunlight. By harvesting hydrogen from water using solar energy. The institute's breakthrough is that they've found a way to harness enough solar energy to make extracting hydrogen from water relatively inexpensively. With fossil fuels running out, there's an ever present need to find renewable fuels. SOUNDBITE (English) "All this will be depleted. We do not want to be there. The panic will come much earlier. I mean twenty, thirty years from now the cost will be so high and people will look for other means for energy." SUPER CAPTION: Michael Epstein, Chemical Engineer Epstein's three (m) million euro (US dollars) project to unlock the molecular key to extracting hydrogen from water was funded by the European Union, Sweden, Switzerland, France and Israel. They also provided scientists. The solar tower is the key to harvesting solar energy - Epstein angles mirrors to focus the suns rays onto the tower. UPSOUND (English) Michael Epstein, Chemical Engineer: "We are already 474 degrees C and we need another 300 or so degrees to start the reaction." Concentrated sunlight reaches 1200 degrees celsius and is channelled into a reaction chamber. Powdered zinc oxide is added Charcoal is mixed in and the concentrated sunbeam 'cooks' the ingredients transforming it into pure zinc metal. Pure zinc is one of the key ingredients to releasing hydrogen from water. The zinc is piped into a laboratory and mixed with steam water. The chemical reaction separates the zinc and water into two distinct parts. One is zinc oxide - the other is hydrogen or fuel. Normally it would take temperatures of 2500 degrees Celsius to separate hydrogen from water -- too much energy and too costly to be economical. However the solar tower does the job for much less and during tests produced zinc at an average of 50 kilograms per hour. SOUNDBITE (English) SUPER CAPTION: Michael Epstein, Chemical Engineer The beauty of the process is that nothing is exhausted. Zinc oxide which is turned to zinc, turns back to zinc oxide - and the only bi-product of combusting hydrogen is water. It's a process that could lead to an unlimited fuel for the future. Scientists from Ndejje University have embarked on a campaign to train Ugandans how to make energy from waste for lighting and cooking. The move comes as a result of Sweden running out of garbage to make energy and allegedly opting to import waste. In this report, the scientists share a few tips on how to manufacture energy from waste.
