U.S. scientists have developed a material that can store solar energy in chemical form and release it on demand. The new technology may overcome one of the greatest obstacles of harnessing solar energy, or intermittent sunlight. It changes into a different shape during this process. When exposed to a small amount of heat, light or electricity, these molecules will resume its initial shape, liberating the stored energy. The material presents an environmentally friendly alternative because nothing is consumed or burned during the process. Hence, there will be no emissions. To generate sufficient heat,...

In 1905, the famous physicist Albert Einstein theorized that light was actually a particle, which helped explain the photoelectric effect. Now, scientists at the Imperial College London in England are working to develop a photon-photon collider that might be able to turn light into matter, which is a process that also takes place during the largest explosions in the universe called gamma-ray bursts. The idea is based on a theory from 1934, which claimed that when two photons, or light particles, smash together, it would create matter in the form of an electron and a positron. Professor Steven Rose from the Department of Physics at the Imperial College London is quoted as saying: "What was so surprising to us was the discovery of how we can create matter directly from light using the technology that we have today in the UK. As we are theorists, we are now talking to others who can use our ideas to undertake this landmark experiment." There are reportedly at least three facilities that have the necessary technological equipment to make the process work, and the researchers from Imperial College London expect to start conducting their experiment in about a year.

In 1966 Indian Nuclear Physicist Dr Homi Jhangir Bhabha claimed India was on the verge of producing a nuclear weapon, but this man so important to achieving that goal was killed in a suspicious plane crash not long after his speech. It is speculated that the CIA assassinated Bhabha to prevent India acquiring nuclear weaponry. India successfully tested a nuclear weapon 8 years later, with the fantastically named Smiling Buddha device, which India said they’d used to cause a “peaceful nuclear explosion”, a description which makes about as much sense as a pleasant case of diarrhea, or a really lovely Isis video. Eugene Mallove was a scientist, science writer and a believer in cold fusion, a hypothetical form of nuclear reaction which could provide the world with cheap energy. Unsurprisingly this isn’t something which major energy companies would like to see developed, because when energy becomes cheaper the gas and oil fat-cats will have to start downsizing their yachts and stop eating bathtubs full of caviar, which is what I presume rich people do. In the last twenty years scores of world-famous astronomers have died around the world, with many being close colleagues in deep field and earth collision studies. Allan Sandage and Geoffrey Marsden were astronomers and colleagues who died within days of each other of a rare non-transmittable disease affecting only 1 in 100,000 people. It was rumoured that both were warned against revealing information about an imminent earth-bound asteroid, and they weren’t the only ones. In 2003 Britain’s Government was struggling to find compelling reasons to join the Iraq war alongside America. They eventually released a dossier detailing how Iraq had weapons of mass destruction capable of launching within 45 minutes. But, in an off the record remark to a BBC journalist, Dr David Kelly, a biological warfare scientist employed by the Ministry of Defence, basically said these claims were a crock of crap.

Scientists have determined that Dark Energy, the thing that supposedly makes up the largest part of the Universe, doesn't really exist. That's big time major news, y'all. Strange Days, indeed. God bless everyone, T @newTHOR on twitter https://www.facebook.com/thornewsgo the article http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2017/03/dark-energy-thought-to-make-up-68-of-the-universe-may-not-exist-royal-astronomical-society-1.html "Dark Energy Thought to Make Up 68% of the Universe, May Not Exist" --Royal Astronomical Society March 30, 2017 Enigmatic dark energy, thought to make up 68% of the universe, may not exist at all, according to a Hungarian-American team. The researchers believe that standard models of the universe fail to take account of its changing structure, but that once this is done the need for dark energy disappears. The team publish their results in a paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Our universe was formed in the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago, and has been expanding ever since. The key piece of evidence for this expansion is Hubble's law, based on observations of galaxies, which states that on average, the speed with which a galaxy moves away from us is proportional to its distance. Astronomers measure this velocity of recession by looking at lines in the spectrum of a galaxy, which shift more towards red the faster the galaxy is moving away. From the 1920s, mapping the velocities of galaxies led scientists to conclude that the whole universe is expanding, and that it began life as a vanishingly small point. In the second half of the twentieth century, astronomers found evidence for unseen 'dark' matter by observing that something extra was needed to explain the motion of stars within galaxies. Dark matter is now thought to make up 27% of the content of universe (in contrast 'ordinary' matter amounts to only 5%). Observations of the explosions of white dwarf stars in binary systems, so-called Type Ia supernovae, in the 1990s then led scientists to the conclusion that a third component, dark energy, made up 68% of the cosmos, and is responsible for driving an acceleration in the expansion of the universe. In the new work, the researchers, led by PhD student Gábor Rácz of Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, question the existence of dark energy and suggest an alternative explanation. They argue that conventional models of cosmology (the study of the origin and evolution of the universe), rely on approximations that ignore its structure, and where matter is assumed to have a uniform density. "Einstein's equations of general relativity that describe the expansion of the universe are so complex mathematically that for a hundred years no solutions accounting for the effect of cosmic structures have been found. We know from very precise supernova observations that the universe is accelerating, but at the same time we rely on coarse approximations to Einstein's equations which may introduce serious side-effects, such as the need for dark energy, in the models designed to fit the observational data." explains Dr László Dobos, co-author of the paper, also at Eötvös Loránd University. In practice, normal and dark matter appear to fill the universe with a foam-like structure, where galaxies are located on the thin walls between bubbles, and are grouped into superclusters. The insides of the bubbles are in contrast almost empty of both kinds of matter. Using a computer simulation to model the effect of gravity on the distribution of millions of particles of dark matter, the scientists reconstructed the evolution of the universe, including the early clumping of matter, and the formation of large scale structure. Unlike conventional simulations with a smoothly expanding universe, taking the structure into account led to a model where different regions of the cosmos expand at different rate. The average expansion rate though is consistent with present observations, which suggest an overall acceleration. Dr Dobos adds: "The theory of general relativity is fundamental in understanding the way the universe evolves. We do not question its validity; we question the validity of the approximate solutions. Our findings rely on a mathematical conjecture which permits the differential expansion of space, consistent with general relativity, and they show how the formation of complex structures of matter affects the expansion. These issues were previously swept under the rug but taking them into account can explain the acceleration without the need for dark energy." If this finding is upheld, it could have a significant impact on models of the universe and the direction of research in physics. For the past 20 years, astronomers and theoretical physicists have speculated on the nature of dark energy, but it remains an unsolved mystery. With the new model, the team expect at the very least to start a lively debate. The Daily Galaxy via Royal Astronomical Society

U.S. scientists have developed a material that can store solar energy in chemical form and release it on demand. The new technology may overcome one of the greatest obstacles of harnessing solar energy, or intermittent sunlight. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University discovered that azobenzene, a type of photoswitching molecules, can absorb and store the sun's energy. It changes into a different shape during this process. When exposed to a small amount of heat, light or electricity, these molecules will resume its initial shape, liberating the stored energy. The material presents an environmentally friendly alternative because nothing is consumed or burned during the process. Hence, there will be no emissions. To generate sufficient heat, the molecules have to be packed very closely. The team attempted to attach the molecules to a single carbon nanotube, but the results were far from satisfactory. Scientists later realized the problem can be resolved if multiple nanotubes are packed closer together. Azobenzene will not be efficient at producing electricity, but can be employed for heat-related uses, such as cooking. Scientists envision that the materials will be used in liquid form, providing an efficient and safe alternative to using firewood for cooking in developing countries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health.
